GENERATIONS OF HISTORY AT BLUEBERRY HILL
The Barn’s Beginning
Built by Grandpa Rufus, Uncle Gene, and Uncle Harlow with help from friends and neighbors, the original barn was completed in 1949. The foundation was crafted from hand-poured concrete filled with field rock, while the joists were made from solid oak sourced directly from the farm. The impressive gambrel-style loft ceiling rises 20 feet, creating the distinctive character still visible today.
Family Transition
Royce and Eloise Wall (Sandra’s parents) purchased the farm that included the barn. For decades, the structure served its original purpose as a working farm building, storing equipment and hay. This period preserved the barn’s authentic character while it awaited its next chapter.
The Blueberry Hill Revival
Sandra and her husband JR were given the opportunity to restore the barn when her parents no longer needed it for farming purposes. They began a loving transformation, preserving the original character while adding modern amenities. In 2017, they expanded the space by an additional 2,000 square feet, using reclaimed wood from a packhouse in Pilot Mountain to maintain the authentic rustic charm—beginning a new era as one of North Carolina’s most beloved wedding venues.

Meet the owners
Sandra and JR Luffman bring unique backgrounds to their role as venue hosts. Sandra, a retired labor and delivery nurse, and JR, a former high school principal, have combined their people-centered careers with a passion for hospitality. Their deep connection to the property goes beyond business—this barn has been in Sandra’s family for generations. There’s a special joy when couples they already know celebrate at Blueberry Hill, including babies Sandra once delivered and students JR once taught, now beginning their married lives where family traditions run deep.
