Wedding Relics That Should Be Left in the Past
A NC wedding venue reflects on outdated trends

After 11 years of hosting weddings at The Barn at Blueberry Hill near Charlotte and Winston-Salem, we’ve seen plenty of trends come and go. Planning a wedding can feel overwhelming with so many expectations to navigate. I still remember flipping through my parents’ wedding album—some of those trends really make you wonder what they were thinking! Let’s sit down and talk about which wedding traditions might be better left as fond memories.
Balloon Arches
Those colorful balloon arches were everywhere in the ’80s and ’90s—I set up plenty of them myself. But here’s the thing: balloons don’t age well in photos, and they’re not great for the environment either. Why not try a beautiful floral arch instead? You can even reuse it in your garden afterward.
Disposable Cameras
I used to love placing disposable cameras on every table, hoping for those candid shots. But let me tell you, half of them came back with pictures of centerpieces or someone’s thumb! These days, a simple wedding hashtag works so much better—your guests can share photos instantly, and you can see them all in one place.
Themed Weddings (Gone Too Far)
Don’t get me wrong, I love personality in a wedding. But when I see couples going full costume party, I worry those photos won’t age well. Instead, why not sprinkle your interests throughout the day? A favorite song here, signature cocktails there—subtle touches that show who you are without the full production.

Massive Bridal Parties
Back in my early days, I’d see wedding parties with 10 or 12 people on each side. It looked impressive walking down the aisle, but it was stressful and expensive for everyone involved. A smaller group—maybe just your closest friends—makes everything more intimate and manageable for your budget.
Bridesmaid Clones
I’ve dressed so many bridesmaids in identical everything over the years. But here’s what I’ve learned: your friends have their own style and probably don’t dream of wearing matching seafoam green. Let them choose dresses in your color palette—the photos look more natural, and everyone’s more comfortable.
Bad DIY
Pinterest can be wonderful or dangerous, depending on your crafting skills. I’ve seen too many brides stress themselves out trying to hot-glue 200 favors the night before their wedding. Save yourself the headache—hire help for the big projects and only DIY what you actually enjoy making.

Plain Guestbooks
Those simple “sign your name” books always seemed a bit boring to me. What about something you’ll actually look at years later? I’ve seen couples use photo frames for signing, vintage mailboxes for notes, or even quilts for guests to sign. So much more meaningful than a list of names.
Champagne Towers
They look impressive, I’ll give you that. But I’ve seen too many of these topple over during toasts. If you want something special for the champagne moment, try a signature cocktail bar instead—everyone gets to participate without the risk of broken glass.
Outdated Decor
Those mirror centerpieces and puffy chair covers had their day, but they feel dated now. I’m seeing couples go for simpler, more personal touches—hand-lettered signs, greenery from a local garden, or family photos that tell their story.
Chocolate Fountains
Messy and sticky—that’s all I can say about these. Someone always drops something in the chocolate stream, and cleanup is a nightmare. If you want something sweet, a dessert bar or local chocolates work so much better.

Useless Wedding Favors
How many little picture frames or bubbles have you taken home from weddings? Most end up forgotten or thrown away. If you want to give something, make it edible—everyone loves a good cookie. Or skip favors altogether and put that money toward your guests’ experience.
Overpriced Wedding Day Schedules
I’ve seen couples spend hundreds on individual printed timelines for every guest. Unless you’re having a very formal affair, one nice sign near the entrance does the job just fine and saves your budget for things that matter more.
Cake Smash
This one depends on your personality. Some couples love the playful cake smash, others find it messy and wasteful. Think about what feels right for you—there’s no rule that says you have to smash cake in each other’s faces.
Chicken Dance
Do you really want your wedding remembered for everyone flapping their arms? I’ve found that good music and a band that reads the room work much better for getting people on the dance floor.

Big Wedding Dresses
Those enormous ballgowns looked stunning in photos, but I watched so many brides struggle to walk, sit, or dance. Today’s brides often choose comfort—flowing skirts, even jumpsuits. You want to enjoy your day, not wrestle with your dress.
Your wedding should reflect who you are today, not just repeat what’s always been done. As you plan your special day, ask yourself: What traditions feel right for us? Trust me, you’ll be happier when your wedding truly feels like yours.
